It's nearly five years since we last had a cat. Before that we'd had cats for thirty-five years non-stop. We live on a farm in the absolute middle of nowhere. We've become aware of an abandoned cat in the last three or four weeks, left behind by a chaotic bunch of people who have recently moved away to God knows where. The weather has been extremely cold for a week, and this afternoon the cat was lurking around our house looking scrawny and desperate. We've bought some cat food for it but it runs a mile as soon as it sees us. Obviously, I can't leave the cat food out all night. I know that cats can be very self-sufficient but this one is looking emaciated and bedraggled and has clearly suffered during this horrible spell of weather. What can I do to get it to come a bit nearer so that we can give it something to eat?
