The author could have cut out all the twaddle and got to the only salient point "there is no bedrock to American identity, just rubble). A bunch of disparate States who get together to elect a president they all ignore and to celebrate St Patrick's Day.. Give it another 500 years or so before you can even begin to start trying to define "American Folk Music".
