I have some experience of same myself.
I had the luxury of retreat, which in your case was unavailable to you; so I have retreated. Not proud of it, but the alternative seemed increasingly inhumane. Meaning that to persist would have rendered ME inhumane, I just haven't got your intestinal fortitude I guess.
And as for the relative -- somebody greater than I said it better --
