Then Joe Public may not think about NI from one day to the next, but has a strong emotional attachment to "The United Kingdom': it is part of their fundamental identity. Rubbish. People on the mainland would be dancing in the streets if NI went. But it would not do to underestimate the difficulties of getting there. To begin with, there was plenty of loyalist violence before, so there would be a significant risk to that breaking out again. That would be an internal Irish problem.
