Nails are fine for Nylon strings .. but you just don't get the quality of sound with steel strings. I use steel finger picks and have for something like 27 years. I'm a compulsive biter too but I have grown them from time to time. I find nails too unreliable apart from the fact that your nails are on the wrong side of your fingers.
