It is a tragedy. When my son was young, I was always afraid I'd make this fatal error. Thankfully, I never did. There are stickers parents can put on the driver's door window reminding him/her to check the back seat when exiting the car, but I imagine in time the parent wouldn't even notice it. Whenever I hear on the news that this has happened, it seems to me that white parents with good jobs and no accent get off without being charged, but others get prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
