Ah, not the guy I thought you were! But of course, a solo performer isn't (or shouldn't be) trying to 'make it sound like a four or five piece pop group' - I certainly wouldn't. He/she should be doing their own, solo interpretation of the song. The over-arching memories I have of Bruce Springsteen concerts are the songs he sang with just his own acoustic guitar accompaniment. Absolutely wonderful 'hairs-on-the-back-of-your-neck' stuff. I 'do' two or three classic pop songs, that's all, but I try to do them 'my way', otherwise simply trying to duplicate a band-record is not only very in-satisfying for me, but also doomed to result in failure. And I don't sing them in folk clubs, only 'acoustic music' clubs or open-mics. Regarding the Stones, I'm in absolute agreement with you!
