Kendall, I've travelled with both and never had a problem. In advance of the flight I request space in the first class wardrobe for my guitar and have always been accomodated. Then when I get to the gate I review with the utmost deference my request, inasmuch as I don't normally fly first class. This usually works. There are well designed pet carriers for your dog available for purchase or maybe you can borrow one. A visit to the vet with a request for a mild tranquilizer for the comfort of the animal has been my choice. I have administered the tranquilizer prior to departure and my dog was fully recovered shortly after arrival. hope this helps.
