I can't immediately place this in the Fuller discography (he used that song structure numerous times, in E and G, and maybe in A as well -- the old "Crow Jane" tune), There's a verse from "Pistol Slapper Blues," and the first two verses were, I think, originally recorded by Jimmie Rodgers. Great performance, but Cephas and Wiggins always bring their own originality, and I would consider this a salute to Fuller rather than a cover. This is what I make of the lyrics. I was standin', standin' in Richmond On the corner of Broad and Main Up walked two police, Said, "Son what is your right name?" Then I told him my name Was stamped on my shirt I'm a woman fool lover I sure can't got no work [that's what it sounds like] My little gal, she went away Didn't even write me Got my mind all worried Like water in a deep blue sea. Well, I'm goin' up town I'm gonna talk with that chief police Lord, my little gal in trouble And I sure can't find no peace. I'm gonna buy me a bulldog I'm gonna shepherd two greyhounds [that's what it sounds like] I'm gonna use these dogs Just to run my good gal down. I'm gonna use these dogs Just to watch me while I sleep Just to keep them men From making their early creep. Lord, I wrote one line And I laid my pencil down My heart struck sorrow And the tears come rollin' down. Uh huh, uh huh, Uh huh, aw shucks [Fuller usually says "Oh, pshaw"] You know two men lovin' you But one of 'em's got to go. Then I feel, feel like slappin' My little pistol in your face Lord, now, In some graveyard 'll be your restin' place. Graveyard, graveyard, It's a lowdown dirty place Lie flat on your back Throw mud all in your face. I'll drink muddy water I'll sleep in a hollow log Ain't gonna stay here, woman, Be treated like no dog. That's why I was standin', standin' in Richmond On the corner of Broad and Main Up walked two police Said, "Son, what is your right name?"
