Steve Gardham Why Is the Lady of Carlisle Speechless? (22) RE: Why Is the Lady of Carlisle Speechless? 16 Aug 18

Just for the record I've translated the very brief passage from Saint Foix. It occurs in a section on the histories of Paris street names. He is considering the origins of Rue Des Lions near Saint Paul.

This street took its name from the building and of course where were contained the large and small lions of the King (In view of some other versions of the story by this I read he means some were tigers/cheatahs etc.)
One day when Francis the First was amusing himself watching a combat of these lions, a lady, having dropped her glove, said to de Lorges: "If you want me to believe you love me as much as you swear every day, go pick up my glove."
De Lorges went down, picked up the glove in the middle of the terrible animals, returned, threw it at the lady's nose, and since, in spite of all the advances and instigation that she made him, wanted never to see her again.
