WHISKY WINE
(Eric Bogle) A sodden bag of dirty rags at the gutter-side I lie
And people stop and they stare at me, then quickly pass me by
And though naebody stops tae help, I dinnae really mind
They can keep their charity, for I've got whisky-wine.
Chorus:
Ho-ree ho-raddy ma bairn, ma wee laddie
See with yer dreams have done tae yer daddy...
For twenty years in countless bars, ye've kept me frae despair
And when I've turned tae you for help, ye've aye been waitin' there
And though ye'll pit me in ma grave lang afore ma time
Ye're the only friend I ever had, ma dwarling whisky-wine
Ye'll see me in a thousand bars, or lyin' in the street
And maybe once or twice ye'll stop and ye'll help me tae ma feet
Just go yer way, Samaritan, Ah've lang since chosen mine
Ah'm half-way doon the road tae Hell, me and whisky-wine

Sung by Eric Bogle on 'Pure'
I met an old down-and-out in Glasgow once. He was an Irishman who conned half-a-crown of me for a 'wee drop of whisky-wine'. Unusual to call it that and the phrase stuck, this song is the result. Written in June 1972. Eric.
