It's the same phenomenon athletes refer to as "being in the zone." This reportedly feels like time slows down and you cannot go wrong. Bands like the Grateful Dead (wait, there are no bands like the Grateful Dead) purposely engaged in collective improvisation to get to a state where the individual player is subsumed in the group mind, and the collective experience is shared by the audience. I've occasionally experienced this state while playing music with others. It really is quite a high.
