Celtic, Irish, German & French roots way, way back. "I honked my horn for a passin' lane." “Horn OK Please” in the Caribbean. Different toots on different islands and the Florida mainland depending on left or right hand drives. Probably goes back to nautical signals. Still a thing in the islands, the mainland not so much except on farms, construction sites &c.
