The Highway Code recommends, IIRC, keeping a two-second gap from the vehicle in front. To my mathematical mind, this means a theoretical maximum flow rate of 1800 vehicles per hour per lane. You can get closer to this with higher speeds, when the 2-second gap distance is large compared to vehicle lengths. N.B. I did say "theoretical".
