We're been singing this old chestnut in a concert of my mother's favorite folk songs and ballads for the past year.

I didn't have a clue what the expression "I swan" meant, although I'd heard that it's a common expression in rural Pennsylvania. It does make sense that it's a form of "I swear" as clarified above. Thanks!
