It is, or sounds like, a straightened out version of the popular tune for The Lakes Of Ponchartrain. It would be interesting to know if Ponchartrain was an inspiration, or at least at the back of Thom Moore's mind when writing Cavan Girl. That's not to detract from Cavan Girl, which is a fine song, it's just that the tune is so similar as to suggest an influence.
