Just moved last summer to southern Ontario, and lardy gawd I miss da lads. Big Joe Mufferaw was actually a kid book before it was a Stompin' Tom song. And the story was based on an old Valley term for people who tried to work past their capabilities, as in "Who'dya think ya are there Mufferaw Joe?" Apparantly, the legend has a history in fact, as they usually do. There was a strong man back in the early logging days that opened up the Valley with a French name like Mauferand, which got slurred over time to Mufferaw... or so the story goes.
