I was always mystified about black marble until I spent a week in Kilkenny some four years ago. I took the usual tourist tour round the city - I'm no snob, it was my first visit - and the information was volunteered that, after some exposure to the weather, Kilkenny limestone turns black, hence the reference. Don't ask me to explain; I'm not a geologist. Annraoi
