I've just watched this Netflix original film about the life - and death - of Sam Cooke. The film ended with the soundtrack of "A Change Is Gonna Come", and I was yet again moved to tears. I've always loved his music but hadn't realised just how active he was in the empowerment of black people in America - creating his own record company and publishing company - and attracting the attentions of both the Mob and the FBI in the process. The so-called investigation by the LAPD into the circumstances of his death in 1963 was perfunctory - the true background to it all will perhaps never be revealed. But his music lives on.
