My understanding is that this song was written by the fiddler in Redgum. In the album "Redgum - Caught in the Act" Hugh sates that he wrote it after meeting an old drover on a train. They got tae talking and he more or less told yer man his life story during the course of the journey. Other great Redgum songs include 'The Last Frontier' 'I was only 19' 'The Killing Floor' and the depressing 'Gladstone Pier'. Infact all of their songs are bonza ye ken.
