There is some strong provenance in the form of personal references to the man "Michael Finnegan" in World War I leading many to believe the song originated in the trenches of that conflict. The first verse documented was "He grew whiskers on his chinn-again, he shaved them off and they grew in-again" was a very popular ditty, it seemed to grow from there. | |||
