The first verse reminded me of the "dont use no green or rotten wood ,they'll get you by the smoke" line from Copper Kettle but then the song changes to being about wood used for building ships. Does you friend recall the music for the song? It seems to me a bit like the rhythm used in I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing By - so maybe the same tune ?
