His Wiki entry summarises his career as "politician, screenwriter, actor, comedian, and director", and says he also has a law degree, so he's not just a comedian. Is that so different from the US electing a former Hollywood actor - Ronald Reagan - as President? And there are other examples of actors (as well as TV 'personalities') becoming politicians even if they have not (yet) stood as presidential or prime ministerial candidates. Dame Judi Dench comes to mind.
