Mark, there are older types of bow that favour triple- and quadruple-stops. Obviously they require different playing techniques. Modern bows are perfect for double-stops; triple-stops are available only by "cheating", but not by any "folk hold". Why then do such "folk holds" exist? I know of only two reasons:- they have been passed as traditions dating back to times when those old bows were in use;
- they seem to be easier at first glance, but are not really.
BTW, fingerboards and bridges were different before the 1800s as well: less curved and thus further facilitating multi-stops.
