How well I remember the uninspired and uninspiring salads of my youth (post-WW2 Britain): round lettuce, tomato, cucumber and usually a radish. The dressing was salad cream, a ghastly mayonnaise substitute flavoured with mustard to disguise the inferior quality. Things like olive oil, imported and expensive, were unheard of at the time. Ugh!
