I heard a version that went: 'See a pin and pick it up ...' I will (nearly) always pick up coins, even a penny, in spite of a friend long ago who said she was too proud to pick up a small coin. They can add up to several pounds a year (so a free beer). But recently I have been finding far fewer coins lying about. Are people needing to be more careful these days, and either not dropping them, or stooping to pick them up themselves? As for picking up a pin - I probably wouldn't bother.
