Growing up in California in the 50s, we sang a song that went like this: I went to the animal fair The birds and the beasts were there The old baboon by the light of the moon Was combing his amber hair The monkey he got drunk And fell on the elephant's trunk The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees And what became of the monk, the monk, the monk? Anyone else remember this? I have a feeling that this song is/was pretty well known in the US, maybe even in songbooks, I no longer live there so I'm not sure. But where is it from, how old is it, does it have any deeper meaning beyond the spectacle of what became of the monk?
