...heavy metal, punk ,rap, and goth... &c consumers would not self identify as pop music consumers. Each of these genre market rebelling, to one extent or another, against pop culture as part of their cache. If you're in the business of producing pop music you'll know who you're target demographic is. It hasn't changed since the beginning. Doesn't mean they're all evil, or bad people. They're just consumers like everybody else.
