Today has been very smoky - we are 5-6 hours drive north-west from Sydney, with fires between us and the coast. Depending on wind direction we can have clear days (the last few days have been clear, thank goodness) or smoky, or very smoky. Today is very smoky, and the air quality is regarded as "hazardous". The one saving grace is that, at present, there aren't any fires too near.
