Gurney, No they weren't "very" new, and they weren't expensive. German concertinas were cheap, mass produced instruments, hence their spread to all corners of the earth and incorporation (with accordions) into so many music traditions. They were also an instrument that novices could easily learn to play and, as small instruments go, quite rugged (or relatively easily repaired if damaged).
