I'm listening to his voice right this second as Terry Gross repeats an interview she did with him in 2018. It is gravelly, halting, inflected and sonorous all at once.

I was on a job in the oilfields in a cafeteria in the middle of Prudhoe Bay. Somehow it turned out that a pretty inspector and I were both familiar with "Don't Bury Me" and we launched into it together full voiced and I've been reminded of the moment many times since. But the way I remember it is with his indelible voice.
