Mom! Somebody's gonna have to 'splain this one to me.... I called the Social Security Administration the other day to report my wife's passing as required by law. Now, when a spouse dies, the widow or widower is entitled to a one-time death benefit of something like $250. It seems to me that everyone reporting the death of a spouse who is a Social Security beneficiary is also going to want to apply for the death benefit. So, one would think that since the two are so closely associated, one should be able to do both things with one phone call, right? Wrong! I had to make an appointment for someone to call me back a week later to take my application for the death benefit over the phone. If it wasn't such an overused phrase, I'd say, "Go figger!"
