Oh dear Jeri, I'm afraid we were taught to sing using what we fondly imagined was a black 'slave' accent, which we felt gave the song atmosphere and authenticity. No racism was intended or felt. But I do understand how it might offend people nowadays. How times have changed, and are still changing!
