I think what was so effective was the way the actors often performed live to his music, eg the shoot out sequences in the westerns, at a time when other producers were just tagging on an almost irrelevant disco soundtrack after the filming. Worse still has been the fashion to just use old chart hits to accompany films. Perhaps his legacy then will be reinstating the studio orchestras with original scores, now firmly re-established with the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter and other blockbusters that I’ve actually never seen.
