Appended is an enquiry about a song that came in to the VWML. Steve Roud forwarded it to the Tradsong mailing list but no-one there seems to have responded, so I thought we should try here. I've tried to select appropriate words for the thread title.

My involvement is purely as the messenger, passing the enquiry on to the combined knowledge of Mudcatters. If anyone has helpful info to offer I will of course pass the word back.

For many years I have been trying to find the name and/or origin of a song sung to me in childhood by my mother. The words are:

'I give and bequeath to my son Fred, the chestnut mare with the dark brown head, the old milch cow and the ten stone sow and the Cochin China cock-a-doodle-doo.'

My family is from Brighton/London. If you have any ideas or can point me to any sources I might check, that would be very helpful.

Thank you.
