While I am not a fan of urethane varnish for marine purposes, I wonder how its characteristics compare with the tung oil varnishes as an instrument coating. It is definitely a harder surface. One differences is that it polymerizes. I believe that it incorporates atmospheric water into its linkages as it cures.
