Vem Kan Segla/Byssan Lull
a/b
(Who Can Sail without Wind?/Galley of Riches)

Two traditional Swedish lullabies.

1a
Vem kan segla förutan vind?
Vem kan ro utan åror?
Vem kan skiljas från vännen sin
Utan att fälla tårar?

2a
Jag kan segla förutan vind,
Jag kan ro utan åror.
Men ej skiljas från vännen min
Utan att fälla tårar.

3b
Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen.
Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen.
Den ene, ack så halt,
Den andre, o så blind,
Den tredje säger alls ingenting.

4(2a)
I can sail without blowing winds,
I can row without oars.
But I never can part from my friend
Without falling tears

5b
Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där blåser tre vindar på haven,
På Stora ocean,
På lilla Skagerack
Och långt upp I Bottniska viken.

Byssan lull

Translation

1a
Who can sail without wind?
Who can row without oars?
Who can part from his friend
Without shedding tears?

2a
I can sail without wind,
I can row without oars.
But I cannot part from my friend
Without shedding tears

3b
Byssan lull, boil the full kettle,
Three wanderers are coming down the road.
Byssan lull, boil the full kettle,
Three wanderers are coming down the road.
The first one is limping,
The second one is blind,
The third one doesn't say anything.

4(2a)
I can sail without blowing winds,
I can row without oars.
But I never can part from my friend
Without falling tears

5b
Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
Three winds are blowing at sea.
One the great ocean,
On the little Skagerrak,
And far up on the gulf of Bothnia.

Byssan lull

Byssan Lull
(Galley of Riches)

Song by Evert Taube (1890-1976) 1919
Swedish author, artist, composer and singer.

Taube edited the text and published the song in his first collection Sju sjömansvisor and Byssan Lull (Seven sailor songs and Byssan Lull ) in 1919.

Byssan Lull became known in 1921, when songwriter Evert Taube adapted it from a song his mother used to sing to him ; while the kettle is boiling, the song tells of various sets of three things, wanderers, stars or treasures.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där kommer tre vandringsmän på vägen.
Den ene, ack så halt,
Den andre, o så blind,
Den tredje säger alls ingenting.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
På himmelen vandra tre stjärnor.
Den ena är så vit,
Den andra är så röd,
Den tredje är månen den gula.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där blåser tre vindar på haven,
På Stora ocean,
På lilla Skagerack
Och långt upp I Bottniska viken.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Där segla tre skutor på vågen.
Den första är en bark,
Den andra är en brigg,
Den tredje har så trasiga segel.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Sjökistan har trenne figurer.
Den första är vår tro,
Den andra är vårt hopp,
Den tredje är kärleken, den röda.

Byssan lull, koka kittelen full,
Tre äro tingena de goda.
Den första är Gud Far,
Den andra är hans Son,
Den tredje mild Jungfru Maria.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
Three wanderers are coming down the road.
The first one, oh so limp,
the second, oh so blind,
the third one says nothing at all.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
In the sky three stars are wandering.
The first one is so white,
The second one is so red,
The third one is the yellow moon.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
Three winds are blowing at sea.
On the great ocean,
On the little Skagerrak,
And far up on the gulf of Bothnia.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
Three schooners are sailing here.
The first one is a barque,
The second one is a brig,
The third one has ragged sails.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
The treasure chest has three figures.
The first one is our faith
The second one is hope,
The third one is the red love.

Byssan lull -- boil the full kettle,
There are three good things.
The first one is God our Father,
The second is his Son,
The third one is the mild Virgin Mary.

"Byssan" is Swedish sailor slang for "kabyssen" with translates to "the galley", the kitchen on a boat, and lull is an idiom for riches.
