It's the British spelling of "skeptics", but my mind reads it a "septics" too, a la "scenic".
I don't really care for the modern interpretation that Mary cheated or Joe was cuckolded. Maybe there was just an arrangement, or a turkey baster, and the "God did it" thing was just what they told the busybodies.
