The snow wasn't settling deeply - by 7.30am it had virtually all gone in our village.
It seems to be all a matter of deeply unfortunate timing that influenced a series of tragic events. If the car accident had happened a few minutes later, the passenger train might have missed it. From the film footage I have seen, the landrover didn't seem to be far enough onto the track to cause a hazard to the freight driver.
