The painted veil

I’ve seen small children die of pain and hunger
Those little sticks of human misery
And in this day and age I often wonder
How long it takes to end such tragedy
For something is wrong when we can close our eyes
or turn and walk away

our reasons and our rhythms
reviewing how we think by what we hear
to live out our days in many different ways
will we still be the same this time next year

I tremble when I think of Hiroshima
Support the cause for mindless wars to cease
Condemn the men of power and ambition
And all who’d threaten everlasting peace
For God only knows there s’ so much to be done
We’ve sins enough to bear

The hawk who masquerades as gentle dove
The bigot who professes to be Christian
And murders in the name of God above
To look at this world beneath the painted veil

I wrote this song many years ago during the period known as
”The Cold War” .
While the threat of nuclear war has been greatly reduced,
the world in this day and age remains a dangerous place                                                                                                                                                          This makes the words of the song as relevant today
as they were when I first penned them
