At his session late in life Peg Leg Howell did a "Blood Red River" that overlaps a couple of stanzas with the Jordan. The red river stuff is a threat of violence, so it makes sense at the end of the Jordan version as part of the common sequence of events in a "Poor Boy"/"Coon Can Game" story: "it runs by my baby's door."

Howell mixes in some "In The Pines." The Jordan and the B.F. Shelton "Cold Penitentiary Blues" are worth comparing.
