Sorry about the blank above, bloody computers trying to tell me what I want again!! Anyway, just a comment on the Kodaly method Bernard; my understanding is that the "hand signal" method actually predated the use of the four line stave introduced by Guido, with the choir master indicating the degree of cahnge in pitch by the appropraite hand signal. The initial stage of the development of the stave was a single line above the words with the notes positioned above on or below the line. The comments about note duration etc I think are missing the point, this was always intended as a learning aid to be used by, and in conjunction with, the choir master who knew the works by heart.
