Though copyrighted by Randy Sparks, the liner notes seem to indicate that the song has older origins: partly legend, but mostly tall-tale or bald-faced lie. The story has been up-dated with references to Francis of the movies, Elvis and the income tax. I haven't searched extensively, but I haven't found an older version of this song than the NCM recording
