Polar bears spend most of their lives on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, which gives them access to the ringed seals that are their primary food. The loss of sea ice habitat is the biggest threat to the survival of polar bears. Because of ongoing and potential loss of their sea habitat resulting from climate change, polar bears were listed as a threatened species in the US under the Endangered Species Act in May 2008.
