This song was originally written and recorded by Carson Robison in 1930. Jumbo Brightwell would have learned it from the Robison record (not a cylinder), and adapted it by removing or changing some obvious Americanisms. Paul Wesley's 1940 recording of the song for Topic used Jumbo Brightwell's words. Sam Sherry did a different revision of the words for British audiences, as in the video clip referenced above. Seth Lakeman's recent rewrite of the song is an abomination.
