Janis is listed as the writer, but the refrain sounds very similar to a very old Vera Ward Hall (1939 Lomax recording) that is currently available from the Library of Congress website. Perhaps she just heard it somewhere and then made up verses for it. Not taking anything away from her ..... It's just cool to see how this stuff connects through time, especially within these aural traditions. Does anybody else have any info about this obvious connection?
