The story about the Third verse (About the Spar) in The Grey Funnel Line is very interesting. When Cyril first recorded the song - in 1959 I think....He did NOT sing that verse. Some time afterwards, Cyril was in a song club and Lou Killen sang the song - including the "Spar" verse. After the performance, Cyril approached Lou and asked if he had written the verse? To which Lou replied - "No you fool, you wrote it..".and something like - "You gave me the full words when you first wrote it...." Cyril had forgotten he had written those words and that is why his first recording does NOT include them. He include them on all subsequent performances and records..... I am told this is a TRUE story!! Tim Radford
