To my understanding, it was not unheard of for chanteymen to play around with pronunciations, by making short vowels long, adding rhythmic syllables, etc.; in fact, I'm given to believe there was a bit of a fad for such.

I'd be inclined to credit Hugill with some authority on the subject (what on earth his politics have to do with it is beyond me).
