Josiah H. Combs, the early 20th century Kentucky folksong scholar, claimed that 'Dixie' was a 'Negro air', stating that "it was heard in the South before the Civil War and before Emmett and Hays 'composed' it." How reliable that is I don't know, since Combs was only born in 1886. |
