Sometime in the 1970s, I was flipping through a Zellers bargain bin of LPs with holes in the corners when I came upon an earth-tone cover of a girl standing on a country road. I read the liner notes and learned that she played 12-string guitar and 5 string banjo. There was a quote from Fred Neil, "She can sure sing the shit outa the blues." I shelled out the $2.50 and brought it home and fell in love with Karen Dalton's voice. The woman I was married to at the time absolutely hated that record and most of the people I played it to were underwhelmed. It is still one of my favourite LPs over 4 decades later.
